How to care for your flooring

Introduction

Almost all premature floor wear comes from grit, standing water and the wrong cleaning product. Three habits prevent nearly all of it.

Stop grit at the door

Grit is abrasive. A long entrance mat — 1.2 metres or more — removes most of it before it reaches the floor. Felt pads under every chair and table leg, checked twice a year, do the rest.

Clean damp, never wet

Vacuum with a hard-floor head, then clean with a barely damp microfibre mop and a pH-neutral cleaner made for your finish. Steam mops and all-purpose sprays strip oils and swell joints.

Refresh on schedule

Oiled floors want a maintenance oil in high-traffic areas every 12 to 24 months. Carpets benefit from professional extraction every two years. Book it in rather than waiting for it to look tired.
